Today Intel introduces “the company’s second-generation Dual-Core mobile processors for increasingly popular ultra thin and light notebook PCs.”
For the moment the only user of these ultra thins chips are Apple with the popular MacBook Air.
The small foot print Merom based processor was originally build for the MacBook Air as a custom processor by Intel. This enabled Apple to build the world’s smallest ultra thin laptop to date.
If you compare the standard mobile Merom chip with the custom made processor for the MacBook Air, it is 60 percent smaller than the standard size.
With today’s announcement, the next generation of the processor is available to every PC manufacture to incorporate for their ultra portables.
The new processors named SL9400 which runs at 1.8GHz and the SL9300 runs at 1.6GHz. They both use a 1066MHz FSB and has a 6MB of L2 cache. These models use 75Watts of power consumption.
Intel is also introducing a pair of 10W processors of the same models. The SU9400 runs at 1.4GHz clock speed and the SU9300 has a clock speed of 1.2GHz They both have a 800MHz Front Size Bus with 3MB L2 cache.
Apple will update the MacBook Air line as soon as Intel start shipping the new models of the chip. You will also see new super sleek ultra portables by other major manufactures to compete with the MacBook Air now the same chips are available to everyone.
