Today, Tuesday the 26th of 2008 there were some flight delays in 40 different airports across the United States.
The cause was due to a computer glitch at a certain Federal Aviation Facility.
How It Started?
It all started with a FAA facility south of Atlanta having problems with their flight plan information not being processed by their computer systems.
The Quick Fix
To fix the issue all that data was re-routed to another FAA facility in Slat Lake City, Utah. The re-routed data was simply too much for the computer systems at Utah center to handle which caused them to overload their systems.
According to FAA, the two facilities are the only ones that provide flight plans for both general and commercial aviation here in the US.
Latest Situation
Right around 5o’clock today the situation was beginning to settle down as the Salt Lake City facility was catching up with the data feed re routed earlier.
By now most of the airports around the US clearing flights one at a time since the flight data is not fully entered into the flight systems.
If you have to catch a flight tonight or anyone you know need the current status of the situation and delay estimates, please visit the FAA site at faa.gov.
